Dear Tiger Families:
Yesterday, our high school halls were filled with a powerful energy during the “Our Story. Our Voice.” roundtable and luncheon. Our students greeted visitors and our CTE Culinary Team cooked for our guests, and it served as a powerful reminder for me that Black History is not just a chapter in a textbook—it is the living, breathing excellence of our children.
For Benton Harbor Area Schools, Black History Month is about honoring our heritage while actively shaping our future. By using the Seven Principles of Kwanzaa—like Unity and Collective Responsibility—we are ensuring that student wellness, safety and mental health supports are designed with our community, not just for them.
Mental wellness is among our highest priorities as a district, which is why we champion the development of mental wellness plans for all students. Their sense of belonging and identity, especially as young people navigating change and growth, is important. Please work with your child and their school’s counselor to develop a strong mental wellness plan.
Our families and neighbors are our greatest assets. When we sit at the same table to listen and learn, we create a supportive environment where every student can thrive.
Thank you for being our partners in this journey. It’s a great time to be a Tiger!
Together in purpose,
Dr. Simone Griffin
Superintendent
