This year, Benton Harbor Area Schools (BHAS) received a clean, unmodified audit opinion, the highest rating possible, confirming that our district is financially strong and stable. This outstanding achievement is thanks to the hard work, focus, and dedication of our entire finance team: Angela Brock-Carter, Director of Finance; Bryan Lentz, Accountant; and Alauna Scales, Accounts Payable.
At the November 18th Board of Education meeting, auditors from Gabridge & Company praised the team for their preparation, accuracy, and professionalism. When asked to repeat it louder, the auditor made it clear for everyone: a clean opinion is the best opinion, and BHAS earned it!
This year’s audit represents Director Brock-Carter’s first full cycle leading BHAS’s financial operations, and she expressed how meaningful it is to see her work and the work of her entire team validated with such a positive result. In reflecting on this achievement, Angela shared the following message:
“To the entire Benton Harbor Area Schools finance and administrative team: The clean, unmodified opinion we received on our 2025 fiscal audit is a powerful and objective validation of your discipline, diligence, and commitment. This report confirms not just our compliance, but our financial health. After a long journey of recovery and stabilization, you have successfully built a foundation of trust that will allow us to focus squarely on our mission: providing quality education for our students. Her dedication, along with the perseverance and accuracy of her team, has helped secure one of the strongest financial positions we’ve seen in years.
This year’s audit showed that BHAS ended the year with revenues exceeding expenses by more than $5 million and maintained a strong General Fund balance — a product of the Business Offices’ phenomenal teamwork, consistency, and financial management.
