I enrolled in Lake Michigan
College in 1970 with two small children in tow. After one year, I
transferred to Western Michigan University and graduated in 1973 with a
Bachelor of Arts (English major, sociology minor). Later I received
a Master of Arts in School Administration.
My career in education began in 1972 when I chose to return to Benton
Harbor to student teach. After I graduated from WMU in the summer of
1973 I was hired as a permanent substitute teaching English at Benton
Harbor High School. I was hired on permanently in October.
Initially, I experienced all of the pomp and circumstances as any other
substitute or neophyte. They were young and full of energy, and so
was I. I taught all levels of English during my 17 year stay at BHHS.
I then took a position as teacher-consultant in the School Development
Program before leaving to become an assistant principal at the high school
and middle school levels. In 1999 I became principal of McCord
Renaissance Middle School. |
