I was born the same year
Jackie Robinson joined the Brooklyn Dodgers, first in a family which grew
to include a dozen children. During my childhood I lived in a
variety of small Michigan towns and eventually graduated from high school
and junior college in Petoskey. I earned a BA from Western Michigan
University in 1969 and finished my MA in Reading in 1979.
I am one of the two members of McCord Renaissance's original family still
working in the building; Ms. Pence is the other. For thirty-three
years I have taught English/language arts (five years at BHHS, three years
in Riverside, Illinois and the remaining quarter of a century at BHAS's
junior high/middle schools). The best part of teaching has always
been interacting with my students - they keep me young (at least
mentally)! The worst part of teaching, in my opinion, is the
paperwork which seems to have increased geometrically since 1970.
I have two sons: Justin, a Morehouse Man in 2002, and Vertis (Chug) who is
a sophomore at Howard University. Chug attended school at McCord; he
still complains that I didn't "give" him an "A" when he took my Great
Books class.
I am a voracious and omnivorous reader who especially enjoys science
fiction, poetry, and mythology. I have already surpassed the twenty
book goal set by Superintendent Dawning for students and staff this year.
I also enjoy going to films. Some recent favorites include Frida,
Bowling for Columbine and Antoine Fischer. |
