Homeland Security
The first priority of our staff is to protect the well-being of each and every one of our students. Effective planning and preparedness are key components of our District’s Crisis Plan. This plan is the result of continuing collaboration between our staff and local law enforcement and fire departments. Crisis Management Teams will be dispatched to each building as needed. We also have a District Crisis Response Committee, which is comprised of counselors, social workers and psychologists who are trained to support the needs of others during and following high stress times. The Crisis Plan also provides clear protocols and procedures to follow for a variety of circumstances.
The Code Orange Alert Status does not necessitate building lock down procedures. We continue to maintain ongoing communication with local law enforcement and our buildings have been directed to review all necessary security measures and follow appropriate protocols.
In the event of a Code Red during school hours, the District will immediately institute its Building Lock Down protocols. Depending upon additional information, further emergency needs will be made in collaboration with police and fire. Parents are urged to tune in to local radio stations WSJM (AM 1400) and WZBL (FM 103.7) for updates. We ask your cooperation in not calling the school, as this ties up telephone lines during an emergency and outgoing calls cannot be made.
As a reminder, parents always have the right to pick up their child(ren) from school unless situations exist that may pose a danger for anyone being out-of-doors. Dependent upon the seriousness of an incident, access to school might be restricted for a period of time beyond our control. As needed, we will continue to update you and the community regarding safety and security issues.
The School Evacuation Plan for Transporting Students provides information on where students will be taken in the event of a building evacuation. We hope this will never take place, but being prepared can prevent injuries.
