Student Records
As a student moves through school, certain information is kept in his/her record file. Regulations concerning those records have been developed at the state and federal levels and clearly explain the right of parents to review those records.
Highlights of the policy include:
- The right to inspect and review your child's records. Call the principal or counselor for an appointment.
- The right to challenge the contents of the records and to a hearing if an agreement is not reached. The right to seek to correct parts of the educational record which is believed to be inaccurate, misleading, or in violation of the student's rights. This right includes the right to a hearing to present evidence that the record should be changed if the district decides not to alter it according to the parent or eligible student's request.
- The right to control the release of records except to another school or (a) by the prior written consent of the student's parent or eligible student; (b) as directory information; or (c) under certain limited circumstances, as permitted by FERPA.
- The right to obtain a copy of any record.
- The right to refuse (in writing) the release of "directory information". This includes name, address, telephone and other personal identifying information. If you wish that your child's name be included in the release of such data, please notify the school in writing and it will be recorded in the student's file. NOTE: This information is released only when in the best interest of the pupil.
- The right to be informed of the FERPA.
All rights and protections given parents under FERPA and this policy transfer to the student when he/she reaches age 18 or enrolls in post-secondary school. The student then becomes an "eligible student".
