Board Policy JCDB-R : STUDENTS RIGHTS AND RESPONSIBILITIES/CONDUCT/ BEHAVIOR CODE/ DRESS CODE/ RULES AND REGULATIONS

The following rules governing student dress and mandatory wearing of uniforms have been developed by the Benton Harbor Area Schools Discipline Code Committee (which is comprised of administrators, parents, teachers, students, and Board members) and adopted by the Board in an effort to maintain discipline and to have a uniform code which shall be maintained by all students in all school buildings during the school day:

  1. No "transparent" clothing shall be worn by students.
  2. There shall be no printing on clothing or uniforms which contains obscene or profane language or gang symbols and signs.
  3. Skirts, dresses, and uniforms shall be worn that extend no higher than two (2) inches above the top of the knee.
  4. No clothing or uniforms shall be worn that allows observation of male or female genitalia.
  5. No hats are to be worn within district buildings.
  6. No coats are to be worn within classrooms at any time (except when heating problems develop within individual buildings and the building principal has given permission during the emergency.)
  7. Shirttails are not to be worn outside of one's pants or skirt, unless it is designed with knitting to be worn outside.
  8. Shorts may be worn that extend no higher than two (2) inches above the top of the knee from May 1 - October 31.
  9. Students may also wear business like dress as an alternative to our uniforms for special occasions. Business like dress means shirt and tie, or suits for men, dresses and suits for female students.
  10. Recognized school club or organized official apparel approved in advance by the administrator or designee. (Example: JROTC uniform, official band apparel, athletic team game day apparel, etc.)

Failure to abide by this student dress code shall result in the following consequences:

First Offense - The student's parents shall be notified and the student shall correct the infraction. All classroom work missed while student is changing shall be made up.

Subsequent Offenses - The student shall serve a day after school detention.
