CREDIT BY EXAMINATION WITH PRIOR INSTRUCTION
- Credit by Examination (CBE) is a means by which Benton Harbor Area School students in grades 6-12 who have received prior instruction in a course but did not attain a passing grade may take a test to demonstrate mastery of the course. Students seeking to gain a passing score for courses failed must obtain administrative and parental approval to take the exam. On recommendation of the attendance committee, a student who has excessive absences may be permitted to earn or regain a passing semester score through credit by examination. With administrative approval, students may apply for CBE through the school counselor if they meet either of the following:
- Students in grades 6-12 who have failed course(s);
- Students not receiving credit due to excessive absences who have been recommended by the attendance committee; or
- Students who have completed all or nearly all of the instruction required for a course but have not received a semester grade due to special circumstances.
- Students who have been offered a free and appropriate education and failed a course will be required to pay the necessary fee(s) for CBE. The fee shall consist of the examination and may include an administration fee for examinations given after school or on Saturdays. The counselor should have the parent/student complete the District application form. Upon completion of the school information section, which includes a school official's signature, the CBE enrollment form should be forwarded to the Secondary Division Test Center. The District's CBE application form should be kept on file at the school.
- CBE scheduling and test administration for District students who have special circumstances or failed a course shall be coordinated by school personnel with principal approval four times during the school year. The tests should be scheduled at the school as deemed appropriate with principal approval. The Test Center will coordinate CBE administration during the summer only for students that schools were unable to schedule during the school year. Required application(s), fees, and/or enrollment form(s) must be submitted to the Secondary Division Test Center for summer test administration.
- To receive CBE credit, students in grades 6-12 who failed a course or have
special circumstances must receive 75% mastery score on the
examination(s). The alpha test score shall be entered on the students
academic achievement record. Scores of 75% or above will receive credit
but shall not be counted toward a students grade point average (GPA) or
rank in class (RC).
- Credit by examination shall not be used to gain eligibility for participation in extracurricular activities.
