STUDENTS
ATTENDANCE/COMPULSORY ATTENDANCE AGES
Under state law, full-time school attendance is required of all
children from six to sixteen years of age, except:
- Any child who is physically unable to attend
school. Written confirmation from a physician may be required.
- Any child whose parent or legal guardian asserts
is unable to perform the school work offered by the district because
of mental or emotional conditions. A written statement from a
psychiatrist, a child center, or clinic must be submitted to the
Superintendent or designee. Children determined to be "unadjustable"
under the terms of the law shall also be excused.
- Any child under nine years of age, who lives more
than two and one-half miles from a public school and for whom no
transportation is provided by the district.
- Any child, twelve to fourteen years of age, while
in attendance at confirmation classes conducted for a period of not
more than five months in any of those years.
- Any child who is regularly employed as a page or
messenger in the Michigan State Legislature.
- Any child enrolled in religious instruction off
district property during school hours may be excused for not more
than two hours per week.
Since parents are responsible for the attendance of
students who are under sixteen years of age, the Board shall do
everything within its power to ensure that parents comply with the
compulsory attendance laws.
