ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT/ADULT EDUCATION GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS
The Board sets the following criteria for issuing a Benton Harbor High School diploma to adults:

  1. Students must earn a minimum of 22 units of credit. At least two of these credits must be earned through this program.
  2. No student shall be allowed to graduate prior to the time one would normally have graduated in the regular day school program.
  3. All credits must be evaluated by a committee prior to a final recommendation to the principal for graduation.
  4. Students under the age of 18, who have been out of Benton Harbor High School for less than two full years, must meet the graduation requirements of the regular day school program.
  5. Students under the age of 18, who have attended a high school other than Benton Harbor High School and have been out of school for less than two full years, must meet the requirements of the school from which they are transferring.

The following courses and units are required for graduation:

  • English 4
  • Mathematics 2
  • U.S. History 1
  • U.S. Government 0.5
  • Job Skills 0.5
  • Science 2
  • Electives 12
    TOTAL 22 units

Adults may be granted special credits toward their high school diploma, based upon the evaluation of one or more of the following:

  1. credits previously earned in grades 9-12;
  2. completion of apprenticeships or other vocational training (up to a maximum of four units of credit);
  3. work experience;
  4. military experience and service schools;
  5. supervised correspondence study courses;
  6. completion of approved trade or vocational school programs;
  7. community college courses; and
  8. approved adult school programs other than those offered by the district.

GENERAL EDUCATION DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM (GEDP)
Students may be granted up to one-half of the required credits needed for graduation after special credit evaluation. An average minimum score of 45 for each section of the GEDP shall be required before granting credit for the subject.

A credit evaluation committee shall be established and charged with determining the number of credits to be granted towards completion of high school diploma requirements. The committee shall consist of the following:

  1. the Director of Vocational Education or designee;
  2. the Head Guidance Counselor;
  3. the Director of Adult Education; and
  4. the Benton Harbor High School principal.

The committee shall meet for evaluations as necessary.
