ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT/ACCELERATION
The Board is aware that on occasion it may be beneficial to a student
to be accelerated by double promotion or skipping a grade. Such double
promotions shall be authorized by the Superintendent or designee in
consultation with the building principal, the school staff, and the
student's parents.
The request for double promotion may come from a parent or a member
of the professional staff.
When such requests are made, the building principal shall collect
various materials concerning the student's progress and ability and
any other information which might be helpful in making a decision
concerning the student's placement.
After accumulating the necessary information, the principal shall
confer with professional staff members who are or have been involved
with the student and get their recommendations. The principal will
review the materials and professional staff opinions with the parent.
Except in very unusual circumstances,
double promotions should not be made unless:
- The student is in the top quarter of grade level placement on
mental ability and achievement;
- The student demonstrates a maturity level commensurate with the
maturity level students in the grade placement for which he/she is
being considered; and
- The professional staff recommends that the double promotion
would benefit the student.
The principal's final recommendation shall be made to the
Superintendent or designee for his/her decision.
