ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT/HOMEWORK RULES AND REGULATIONS
Homework Guidelines for Secondary Schools:
Each secondary principal and staff shall develop a
homework plan for their building.
Instructional staffs
shall consider the following principles in developing flexible
guidelines for homework:
- Assignments to individual students shall stem
from real needs and a consideration of the total educational
background of the individual student.
- Homework shall serve a definite purpose: to
provide drill or practice on a principle or skill already taught; to
provide real-life application of the subject matter taught; to
develop appreciation for or knowledge of community resources; or to
develop the personal culture of the student.
- Homework shall be used as a technique for
learning. "Busy work" turned in by the student and discarded by the
teacher does not further learning; it merely inspires resentment and
lessens the effectiveness of that teacher.
- Homework shall NOT be assigned as punishment
under any circumstances.
- Homework shall be reasonable in view of the
student's situation. Health, housing conditions, outside work or
responsibilities, leisure-time activities, and conflicting demands
of home and school shall not be allowed to become a frustration and
damaging condition for the student.
- Homework shall not be used to replace or reduce
supervised study, which shall take place during school hours. This
type of study usually achieves better results than homework.
- Homework is more effective if a written
communication or a conference with the parent/guardian results in an
understanding of the purpose and ways in which help at home can best
be offered.
- There shall be a cooperative effort on the part
of all teachers to coordinate homework assignments so that students
are not over-burdened with excessive quantities of homework.
- Each teacher shall teach students what to study
and how to study at home.
- Homework shall be checked by the teacher and
mistakes of students indicated for correction, with individual
comments wherever indicated or possible.
