ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT/HOMEWORK RULES AND REGULATIONS
Homework Guidelines for Elementary Schools:

Properly assigned homework can be a valuable bridge between home and school.  The following guidelines shall be observed in assigning homework in grades K-6.

  1. Homework for children below Grade Two shall be assigned and generally be limited to items of the following nature:

  1. suggestions to view certain television programs or listen to certain radio programs;
  2. display and review with parents work done or things learned at school that day;
  3. students asking reasonable questions of the family; and
  4. student drill or practice sessions under parental supervision, after consultation and/ or written instruction from the teacher.

  1. Homework shall begin with simple assignments requiring short periods of time (15-30 minutes). Above Grade Two, homework assignments shall grow progressively more challenging, consistent with the student's ability, needs, and interests.
  2. Books that are school property may be taken home. Individual students who misuse this privilege may lose it. Damage or loss of books, deemed to be the fault of the student, shall be reimbursed to the school in accordance with a formula developed by the Assistant Superintendent for Instruction.
  3. Teachers shall explain all homework assignments in detail. Students shall have a few minutes in class to begin the assignment in order for the teacher to determine if they are working correctly and/or need assistance.
  4. Students shall be given homework assignments that involve only materials available at home or in the school. Students may volunteer for homework assignments that require use of other reference centers.
  5. Homework shall be discouraged on holidays, weekends, or on evenings when the school promotes special functions that involve the students.
  6. Both home and classroom assignments shall always be of a significant and pertinent nature that will truly assist the student in his/her progress. All assignments shall be evaluated by the teacher upon their completion. These assignments shall be corrected and returned within a reasonable amount of time. This evaluation shall be available to the student and/or parents.
  7. Homework shall never be used as punishment or in other punitive ways.
