INSTRUCTIONAL
RESOURCES/INSTRUCTIONAL SERVICES INSTRUCTIONAL MATERIALS CENTERS
In order to assure that the
District media program is an integral part of the educational program
of the District, the following selection objectives shall apply:
-
Provide materials
that will enrich and support the curriculum and personal needs of
students, taking into consideration their varied interests,
abilities, and learning styles.
-
Provide materials
that will stimulate growth in factual knowledge, literary
appreciation, and esthetic and ethical values.
-
Provide a
background of information which will enable students to make
intelligent judgments in their daily lives.
-
Provide materials
on opposing sides of controversial issues so that students may
develop (under guidance) the practice of critical thinking.
-
Provide materials
which realistically represent our pluralistic society and reflect
the contributions made by all groups and individuals to our
heritage.
-
Place principle
above personal opinion and use reason rather than prejudice in the
selection of materials of the highest quality in order to assure a
comprehensive media collection appropriate for students.
While the Board is
legally responsible for the operation of the District, the
responsibility for the selection of instructional media center
materials for secondary schools is delegated to the certified
library/media personnel, within the guidelines implied in this
document of the Board. In the event that a secondary building has no
certified librarian, all materials purchased for that building's
library shall be selected by a committee made up of the principal, a
certified librarian from another District building, the person
assigned to the library in place of a certified librarian, and two
teacher representatives from that building.
While selection of
materials involves many people (teachers, librarians, students,
administrators, and community persons), the responsibility for
coordinating and recommending the selection and purchase of
instructional media center materials rests with the District's
certified librarians.
Educational goals of
the District, individual student learning levels, teaching styles,
curricular needs, staff and student needs, and existing materials
should be considered in developing the library's collection.
Printed materials
shall:
-
be relevant to
today's world;
-
represent artistic,
historic, and literary qualities;
-
reflect problems,
aspirations, attitudes, and ideals of our society;
-
contribute to the
objectives of the instructional program;
-
be appropriate to
the level of students;
-
represent differing
viewpoints on a controversial subject;
-
provide a stimulus
to creativity; and
-
be typographically
well-balanced.
In addition to the
above criteria, non-printed materials shall reflect acceptable
technical quality, clear narration and sound, and have synchronized
pictures and sounds.
