INSTRUCTIONAL MATERIALS CENTERS RULES AND REGULATIONS
In selecting materials for the
secondary school libraries, the certified librarian, in consultation
with the building principal and staff, shall evaluate the existing
collection, assess curricular needs, examine materials, and consult
reputable selection aids housed in their respective libraries.
Gifts in the form of printed and/or non-printed
materials donated to the district libraries shall be reviewed by a
district certified librarian in accordance with Board policy before
they are submitted to the Board for official acknowledgment.
Selection of materials shall be an on-going process
involving acquisition of new materials and replacement of lost and
worn-out materials.
The following procedures
shall apply for consideration of questionable materials:
- Upon discovery of questionable materials, the
building librarian shall request that a committee review these
materials and make a recommendation to him/her.

Upon receipt of an
official complaint, the following procedures shall be followed:
- the building librarian shall inform the
complainant of the selection process and shall make no
commitments;
- the building librarian shall request that
complainant submit a formal "Request for Reconsideration of
Instructional Materials" form;
- the building librarian shall inform the
principal and Assistant Superintendent for Instruction, of the
complaint;
- the building librarian shall keep the
challenged materials on the shelves during the reconsideration
period.
- upon receipt of the completed "Request for
Reconsideration of Instructional Materials" form, the building
librarian shall request a review of the challenged materials
within 15 working days by a review composed of the building
principal or designee, building librarian, two classroom teachers,
one or more parent(s), and one or more
student(s);

the review committee
shall take the following steps after receiving the complaint:
- read, view, or listen to the material in its
entirety;
- check general acceptance of the material by
reading reviews and consulting recommended lists;
- determine the extent to which the material
supports the curriculum; and

complete the
appropriate "Checklist for School Media Advisory Committee's
Reconsideration of Instructional Material" form, judging the
material for its strength and value as a whole and not in part.
- the building librarian shall present a written
recommendation of the review committee to the Assistant
Superintendent for Instruction.
- the Assistant Superintendent for Instruction
shall present the review committee's written recommendation, along
with his/her recommendation, to the Superintendent;
- the Superintendent shall present the review
committee's recommendation, along with his/her recommendation, to
the Board who shall either retain or withdraw the challenged
material; and
- the Superintendent shall convey the Board's
decision to the Assistant Superintendent for Instruction who will
then notify the principal and building librarian.
