CURRICULUM DESIGN/SPECIAL PROGRAMS/SECTION 504 REHABILITATION
It is the policy of the Board of
Education to provide a free and appropriate public education to each
handicapped student within its jurisdiction, regardless of the nature
or severity of the handicap.
It is the intent of the district to
ensure that students who are handicapped within the definition of
Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 are identified,
evaluated and provided with appropriate educational services.
The Superintendent or designee shall
appoint the coordinator of Section 504 activities and provide the
Board with the name of the administrator assigned to the position in
July of each year for the following school year. The Board shall be
informed of any subsequent changes in assignment at the earliest
opportunity but not later than the next regularly scheduled work
session following said appointment.
Under this policy, a handicapped
student is one who (a) has a physical or mental impairment that
substantially limits one or more major life activities, including
learning; (b) has a record of such an impairment, or (c) is regarded
as having such an impairment (34 C.F.R. Section 191.3(1) and (k).
Students may be handicapped under Section 504 and this policy even
though they do not require services pursuant to the Individuals with
Disabilities Education Act (IDEA).
