PROFESSIONAL PERSONNEL EVALUATION RULES AND REGULATIONS
The Superintendent, the Assistant Superintendent for Personnel and Evaluation, and certified administrators are responsible for the administration and supervision of tenure and are charged with the implementation of the Board's policies regarding probationary teachers and their evaluation.

The building principal shall:

  1. Explain the tenure program to all new probationary teachers; explain the evaluation sheet and interpret the importance placed on the various items listed; review the tenure program with the building staff and the helping teachers soon after the beginning of the school year.
  2. Assign a helping teacher to the probationer. The principal may assign a helping teacher: requested by the probationer, or at the request of the helping teacher, or at the principal's discretion.
  3. The performance of all probationary teachers shall be evaluated in writing once per semester during the school year in accordance with the teacher evaluation system.
  4. Probationary teachers whose services are being terminated for performance will be notified sixty (60) days before the end of the school year with the Benton Harbor Education Association receiving a copy of such notification.
  5. It shall be a major administrative responsibility to assist teachers in becoming oriented to the district and to improve instruction through direct observation of the teacher's work. Written summaries of those observations shall be provided with any recommendations the administrator may have for the teacher.
  6. If am evaluator believes a teacher is doing less than satisfactory work, the reasons shall be set forth in specific terms and shall include an identification of the specific way in which the teacher is to improve. In subsequent observation reports, failure to again note a specific deficiency shall be interpreted to mean that adequate improvement has taken place.
  7. Evaluate the work of the probationer and make recommendations regarding tenure status to the Assistant Superintendent for Personnel and Evaluation. He/She shall then review the material with the Board Personnel Committee and the Superintendent.
