BUILDINGS AND GROUNDS
SECURITY RULES AND REGULATIONS
To keep instances of forced
entry, theft, and property damage to a minimum, the following rules
shall be observed by all district staff:
- File documents in filing or other cabinets and keep them locked.
Filing cabinets are a deterrent to vandals and protect documents
during fires.
- Keep all audio-visual equipment as secure as possible and store
out of sight when not in use.
- Make full use of vaults or safes wherever they are available.
- Never keep money or valuables in buildings overnight.
- Administrators shall instruct teachers and other district staff to
not leave personal possessions, purses, wallets, or students' money
unattended.
- Keep desks locked whenever possible.
-
When leaving buildings after school
hours:
- lock all windows and exterior doors; and
-
leave exterior lights on.
- Administrators shall maintain a control system for building keys
and checking locks.
Procedure for reporting
forced entry, theft, damage, destruction of school property:
- Building administrators are responsible for
reporting all instances of forced entry, theft, damage, or destruction
of district property to the Coordinator of Public Service. The
building administrator shall also report such incidents to the
appropriate policy agency and work with them to resolve the matter. If
help is needed to improve the security of buildings or grounds, an
administrator shall request such help from the Coordinator of Public
Service.
- Upon receipt of a report of forced entry, theft,
damage, or destruction of property, the Coordinator of Public Service
shall take steps to secure the building and work with the Group
Director of Operations and Facilities so that emergency repairs can be
made and the building may operate normally. The Coordinator of Public
Service shall maintain records of all instances of forced entry,
theft, damage, or property destruction reported by the administrative
staff and shall make periodic reports to the Superintendent and the
Board.
- In no case shall forced entry, theft, or damage to
district property be ignored or condoned. If students are involved,
the procedures outlined in the student discipline code shall guide the
building administrator's action. The building administrator shall
contact the student's parents/guardians and seek to recover damages
without legal action. If legal action is necessary, the building
administrator shall make such a recommendation to the Coordinator of
Public Service, who shall then conduct an investigation and inform the
Group Director of Operations and Facilities of the findings.
- The Group Director of Operations and Facilities
shall consider all requests from administrators regarding legal action
and shall report the disposition of each case to the administrator who
made such a request, the Coordinator of Public Service, the
Superintendent, and the Board.
