BOMB THREATS
In the event a message is received during
school hours that a bomb has been placed in a district facility, the
person receiving such a message shall inform the building administrator,
and the Superintendent's office immediately.
The building administrator shall inform the
appropriate police agency, which will in turn dispatch plain-clothed
officers, in unmarked cars, without sirens or red lights, to the school
to investigate.
The building
administrator shall alert all employees in the building by a
pre-arranged coded message. Upon receiving such a message, each staff
member’s work area shall be inspected without revealing the reason for
the search to students.
If, in the work area of
a staff member, a package or any unfamiliar object is found, a police
officer shall be informed immediately.
The decision to
evacuate or not to evacuate the building by fire drill or other methods
shall be made by the building administrator and Superintendent in
consultation with police. Buildings should not automatically be
evacuated when warned. Police shall help interpret the warning, but the
decision to evacuate (or not evacuate) shall be an administrative
decision.
If a systematic search
is necessary beyond the initial check made by all staff members, police
(not district personnel) shall do the searching with such staff
assistance as is requested by the police.
Students shall not be
dismissed until the end of the school day, but shall return to the
building when police and district administrative staff determine that no
danger exists.
Office secretaries and
switchboard personnel shall be given instructions for handling
threatening telephone calls.
