PARENT/GUARDIAN
INVOLVEMENT – TITLE I PROGRAMS
The Board is committed to a policy of
parental involvement in the planning, implementation, and evaluation of
existing Title I projects and in planning for future projects.
The Board welcomes the participation of interested
parents. Parents are entitled to assurance that their views shall be
heard, considered, and taken into account when Title I projects are being
developed and implemented. Teachers and administrators are expected to
make every reasonable effort to reflect these parental concerns in
planning the academic program. However, parents must recognize their
advisory role and support the educational goals of the district.
In accordance with the
requirement of the No Child Left Behind Act, and as a recipient of Title I
funds, the Benton Harbor Area Schools Board of Education hereby adopts the
following policy statement regarding the development of a district-wide
Title I Plan for Parental/Guardian involvement and directs the
Administration to implement the following:
- The involvement of all parents/guardians in the
planning, implementation, evaluation, and improvement of Title I
programs/services through participation on building School Improvement
Teams; and District Title I Parent Advisory Council (TOPAC)
- Invitations to parents/guardians to attend the Title
I annual meeting, with additional meeting opportunities being available
as needed, and/or requested, designed to provide Title I information and
program services, and to solicit parent/guardian’s suggestions on
program development, planning, evaluation and operations;
- Assistance to parents/guardians in understanding
Title I, including the providing of information in a language
understandable to the parent/guardian;
- Parent/guardian notification of Title I student
selection and criteria for selection;
- Information regarding student’s achievement and
progress be available at all times;
- A provision for input by Title I staff at regularly
scheduled parent/guardian-teacher conferences and any additional
communication as requested by the Title I staff and or parent/guardian;
- Opportunities to enhance parent/guardians’ capacity
to work with children in the home on school learning; (i.e. Drive For
Success, Math home link, homework, Accelerated Reader, etc.)
- Professional development opportunities for teachers
and staff to enhance their understanding of effective parent/guardian
involvement strategies;
- Ongoing communication between school and
parent/guardian; weekly teacher newsletter; District newsletter and
conferences;
- Other appropriate activities (i.e. Family Math
Nights, parenting/guardian sessions, science, theatre, field trips,
etc.)
- Migrant Education Program (MEP) – Parents/guardians
of students in the MEP will be involved in, and regularly consulted,
about the development, implementation, operation and evaluation of the
program;
- Limited English Proficiency (LEP) – In accordance
with federal law, parents/guardians of LEP students will be provided
notice regarding their child’s placement in and information about the
District’s LEP program. Parents/guardians will be notified about their
rights regarding program content and participation including the right
to choose among programs if alternatives are available.
