It is the responsibility of the Board to operate the
district in as economical a manner as possible, consistent with good
educational practice. If financial conditions and/or enrollment patterns
make it necessary to close schools, the following procedures shall be
followed:
-
Upon receipt of a recommendation from the
Superintendent that a school or schools be closed, and after reviewing
the supporting data, the Board shall instruct the Superintendent to:
-
notify by letter the
parents of affected students and inform them of the action being
considered and proposed arrangements for the future education of
their children;
- inform affected staff and review with them their
rights in the event of school closure; and
-
invite parents and
affected staff to a Board meeting to give input.
- The Board shall take action on the recommendation
after further examination of the Superintendent's recommendations and
receiving comments from parents and affected staff.
- To ensure the smoothest transition, the Board shall
direct that schools scheduled for closure the following year be closed
at the end of the regular school year, unless emergency conditions
dictate otherwise.
- If emergency conditions dictate that a school be
closed during the regular school year, the Board shall allow the
Superintendent a minimum of two weeks to execute the Board's order to
close a school. The Superintendent shall use this two week period to
work with parents and staff in both the sending and receiving schools
to prepare students for the change.
