SCHOOL BOARD POWERS AND
DUTIES
- Under the laws of the State of
Michigan, the Board shall act as the governing body of the public
schools with full powers of direction and control. It shall be
responsible for carrying out the laws pertaining to third class school
districts as outlined in the Michigan General School Laws.
- Taking a broad look at its legal
duties and powers, the Board views its most important functions as
follows:
- Legislative or policy-making - The
Board is responsible for the development of policies and for the
employment of a superintendent who shall carry out its policies
through the development and implementation of administrative rules and
regulations.

Appraisal - The Board is responsible for
evaluating the effectiveness and implementation of its policies.

Educational planning - The Board is
responsible for acquiring reliable information from responsible
sources which will enable it and the staff to work toward the
continuing improvement of the educational program.

Provision of financial resources - The
Board has major responsibilities for the adoption of a budget which
will provide the wherewithal--in terms of buildings, staff, materials,
and equipment--which will enable the district to carry out its
policies.

Interpretation - The Board is responsible for
providing adequate and direct means for keeping the district residents
informed about the schools and for keeping itself and the staff
informed about the wishes of the public if citizens are to be
supportive of the district programs.
