SCHOOL DISTRICT LEGAL STATUS
The Benton Harbor Area Schools,
(herein referred to as the District) is a creation of the Michigan State
Legislature, in which the Constitution of the State of Michigan vests
control of education.
The District was created on June 17,
1965, as a consolidation of 17 districts. In accordance with Act 340 of
the Public Acts of Michigan, the corporate name of the school district
shall be: THE BENTON HARBOR AREA SCHOOLS, BERRIEN COUNTY, MICHIGAN.
On the basis of population, the District
is classified as a district of the third class (population of 10,000 to
125,000) and is governed by the laws pertaining to third class
districts.
