MINUTES OF THE WORK SESSION OF THE BOARD OF EDUCATION
BENTON HARBOR AREA SCHOOLS
OCTOBER 5, 1999
President Carolyn Graves called the October work session of the Board of Education to order at 6:11 p.m. at the Benton Harbor High School Student Commons Area.
Present: Mrs. Annie Robinson, Ms. Michelle Jones, Mr. Waymon Hodges, Mrs. J. Allene Smith, Mr. Ken Woltman and Ms. Carolyn Graves
Absent: Dr. Gladys Peeples-Burks
Recognitions
Superintendent Williams commended BHHS scholar, Tracy Cleveland, for
scoring in the top 5% of achievement on the PSAT scores. Ms. Williams also gave
recognition to former BHHS student, Brandon Newson, for his high achievement
while attending the University of Michigan.
Business and Finance
Assistant Superintendent Mark Giffels reported that Board action
would be requested at the regular meeting to approve adding TransAmerica Life
& Annuity Company as a 403(B) Plan provider.
Instruction
Assistant Superintendent Richard Garrison reported that Board action
would be requested at the regular meeting to approve Project Tiger as sponsored
by the Herald-Palladium. Mr. David Harrison, Publisher, Herald-Palladium,
presented the rationale and the student benefits for continuing this incentive
based newspaper program currently in place at Sterne Brunson, Hull, Fair Plain
West and Sorter Elementary Schools.
Assistant Superintendent Garrison reported that Board action would be requested at the regular meeting to accept and approve a $6,500 Frederick S. Upton Foundation grant awarded to the Creative Arts Academy for the 1999/2000 Visiting Artists/Artists-in-Residence Series.
Mr. Garrison reported that Board action would be requested at the regular meeting to accept and approve a $1,500 Frederick S. Upton Foundation grant awarded to Henry C. Morton Elementary School to fund kindergarten field trips for the 1999/2000 school year.
Assistant Superintendent Richard Garrison reported that Board action would be requested at the regular meeting to approve a consultant contract with Mr. John Finn, CEO, DADS (Dads Are Doing Something) for the 1999/2000 school year.
Human Resources
Assistant Superintendent Nora Jefferson reported that Board action
would be requested at the regular meeting to approve the following action items:
Superintendent's Update
An update on the Community Partnership for Lifelong Learning was
featured in the summer 1999 issue of ActionLine, a Cornerstone Alliance
publication. The article discussed the On Location program, American Youth
Foundation project and the HOSTS mentoring program all of which BHAS
participated.
The District has received a thank you card from the BHHS Class of 1954 that expressed their appreciation for the tour and bus transportation that was provided during their most recent class reunion.
Former BHHS graduate and classmate of Superintendent Williams, John Rudley, has recently been appointed as Vice-Chancellor of the Tennessee Board of Regents.
BHHS graduate, Steve Neal, now a junior at Western Michigan University is No. 1 among all receivers in college football in touchdown receptions, according to the National Collegiate Athletic Association.
Cornerstone Alliance will host an excellent art exhibit that will feature Anne Knuth, BHAS art instructor.
Board Comments
President Graves stated that she has received calls from former BHAS
students who declare that BHAS provided them with the best educational
experience that prepared them to be successful in their adult lives.
