MINUTES OF THE WORK SESSION OF THE BOARD OF EDUCATION
BENTON HARBOR AREA SCHOOLS
JULY 6, 1999

President Ms. Carolyn Graves called the July work session of the Board of Education to order at 6:06 p.m. at the Benton Harbor High School Student Commons Area.

Present: Mrs. Annie Robinson, Ms. Michelle Jones, Mr. Waymon Hodges, Dr. Gladys Peeples-Burks, Mrs. J. Allene Smith, Mr. Ken Woltman and Ms. Carolyn Graves

Recognitions
The Sunrise Rotary has sponsored BHHS student Michael Yates to tour Europe.

Central Administration
Superintendent Williams reported that Board action would be requested at the regular meeting to approve a revision to Board policy IDCG - Extended Programs/Honors Program.

Business and Finance
As an informational item, Assistant Superintendent Mark Giffels stated that in August, due to the projected cash deficit, it is necessary for BHAS to borrow against anticipated state aid for operating. The District would need to adopt a state aid borrowing resolution as prepared by Thrun, Maatsch and Nordberg.

Human Resources and Instruction
Assistant Superintendent Richard Garrison reported that Board action would be requested at the regular meeting to approve the following action items:

Trustee Gladys Peeples-Burks stated that the Scott's grade change appeal would be added to the regular meeting agenda.

Superintendent's Update

Superintendent Williams disseminated to Trustees an invitation to the Seventh Annual Educational Facilities Planning Conference scheduled for October 28 and 29, 1999.

Public Participation
Mr. Curtis Murphy addressed the Board with his concerns regarding the BHAS MEAP scores.

Mrs. Marian Shannon-Oliver addressed the Board and volunteered to serve on any committees designed to benefit students and families. She also asked who is responsible for public relations for the District.

Mr. Reinaldo Tripplett addressed the Board welcoming newly elected Trustee Michelle Jones and questioned what the District is doing to promote BHAS.

Board Comments
Trustee Robinson asked if summer school is offered to 5th grade students. Superintendent Williams responded that enrichment classes are available for students in the 5th grade. Mrs. Robinson also addressed the public's concerns regarding District promotion and public relations - she stated that the Board of Education has a Community and Public Relations Committee and that they will work harder to promote BHAS.

Trustee Smith stated that Mrs. Robinson was the Chairperson of the Board Community and Public Relations Committee for the 1998-99 school year.
