MINUTES OF THE REGULAR MEETING OF THE BOARD OF EDUCATION
BENTON HARBOR AREA SCHOOLS
MAY 9, 2000
Present: Ms. Michelle Jones, Mr. Waymon Hodges, Dr. Gladys Peeples-Burks, Mrs. J. Allene Smith, Mr. Ken Woltman, Ms. Carolyn Graves and student Board member Michael Razor
Absent: Mrs. Annie Robinson
President Graves welcomed everyone and explained that items discussed at the work session are voted on at the regular meeting.
Communications
Trustee Jones read an invitation from Southwest Michigan American Youth
Foundation Leadership Compact (AYF) to attend Recognition Night Thursday,
May 11, 2000 at The Hanson Theatre, Lake Michigan College. Honorees will include
students from Benton Harbor, Lake Michigan Catholic, Lakeshore, Michigan
Lutheran and St. Joseph High Schools.
Minutes
A motion was made by Dr. Peeples-Burks and supported by Mrs. Smith that
the Minutes of the work session of April 11, 2000 be approved as printed.
The motion passed by unanimous vote.
A motion was made by Mrs. Smith and supported by Dr. Peeples-Burks that the Minutes of the special meeting of April 15, 2000 be approved as printed.
The motion passed by unanimous vote.
A motion was made by Mrs. Smith and supported by Mr. Woltman that the Minutes of the regular meeting of April 18, 2000 be approved as printed.
The motion passed by unanimous vote.
A motion was made by Mr. Woltman and supported by Dr. Peeples-Burks that the Minutes of the special meeting of April 29, 2000 be approved as printed.
The motion passed by unanimous vote.
Vendor Payments
A motion was made by Mrs. Smith and supported by Mr. Woltman that
vendor payments in the amount of $1,710,173.44 be approved for payment.
The motion passed by unanimous vote.
Activity of the General Fund was reviewed and accepted as presented.
Recognitions
On behalf of the Benton Harbor Area Schools Board of Education, District
teachers will receive tokens of appreciation for their hard work and dedication
in recognition of Teacher Appreciation week May 7-13, 2000.

Staff Report #1
A motion was made by Mr. Woltman and supported by Dr. Peeples-Burks:
THAT the Board of Education, Benton Harbor Area Schools, meet in closed session on the following dates:
Tuesday, May 9, 2000 before and/or following
the regular meeting of the Board of Education on
that date, andTuesday, June 6, 2000 before and/or following
the work session of the Board of Education on that date,
at the Benton Harbor High School, Student Commons Area, 870 Colfax Avenue, Benton Harbor, Michigan, in said District for the purpose of discussing with legal counsel litigations, negotiations and possible expulsions.

A motion was made by Ms. Jones and supported by Mrs. Smith:
THAT the Board of Education approve the purchase amount of $45,369.75 for five Lochinvar Copper Fin Boilers for McCord and King Junior High Schools.

A motion was made by Mr. Woltman and supported by Mrs. Smith:
THAT the Board of Education approve the operation of a 2000 Summer Lunch Program for the children of the District.

Staff Report #5
A motion was made by Mrs. Smith and supported by Mr. Woltman:
THAT the Board of Education approve the District's participation in this summer's On Location program to be held June 12-16, 2000, at an approximate cost of $21,846.

Staff Report #6
A motion was made by Mrs. Smith and supported by Mr. Woltman:
THAT the Board of Education give formal recognition and praise to Fair Plain Junior High students, Kendra Woods, Santana White, Dalon Shaw, Latoya Broyles, Starla Stokes, Rahim Mohammed and their band director, Sandra Atkins, for outstanding achievement during a Solo and Ensemble Competition.
The motion passed by unanimous vote.
Special recognition was given to all three secondary bands for their participation in the Blossomtime Grand Floral Parade. Special recognition and praise was given to the Fair Plain Junior High Band as winners in Blossomtime Kiddies Parade.

A motion was made by Mr. Woltman and supported by Dr. Peeples-Burks:
THAT Mr. Steven Kolodiziezyck's resignation be accepted and a letter be sent to him thanking him for his services to the students of the Benton Harbor Area Schools.
The motion passed by unanimous vote.
Staff Report #8
A motion was made by Mr. Woltman and supported by Dr. Peeples-Burks:
THAT Ms. Joan Peterson's retirement be acknowledged and accepted and that a letter from the District be sent to her thanking her for her services to the students of the Benton Harbor Area Schools.
The motion passed by unanimous vote.
Other
Following the regular meeting, the Board of Education will recess to
closed session for the purpose of possible student expulsions.
Superintendent's Update
The District has received positive comments praising BHAS band students
and the beautiful float entered during the Blossomtime Grand Floral Parade.
The State of Michigan has awarded a grant locally for the implementation of a Prenatal and Early Childhood Nurse Home Visitation program. BHAS has participated in the planning of the program that targets teenage and first-time pregnant and low-income women and their children through age two.

Michigan on May 4th, 2000.

Trustee Woltman complimented Superintendent Williams for the BHAS public announcements on WSJM Radio.
Trustee Smith praised the BHAS marching bands for their excellent performances in the Blossomtime Grand Floral Parade. She also gave recognition to former BHHS graduate, Irving Eddie, for winning a national model search.
Trustee Hodges stated that over the weekend he visited a new school building in Indianapolis, Indiana in a district that has a similar make-up as BHAS and suggested that BHAS associate with other urban districts. Mr. Hodges expressed his disappointment with the Board for re-voting the Bond option.
President Graves thanked trustees Peeples-Burks and Smith for their attendance at the Michigan Association of School Boards 2000 Regional Meetings & Awards Ceremonies. She also reminded trustees to turn in the superintendent's evaluation form.

THAT the Board of Education recess to closed session for the purpose of possible student expulsions.

Staff Report #1
A motion was made by Mr. Woltman and supported by Mrs. Smith:
THAT Ebony McCall be expelled for 180 days from the Benton Harbor Area Schools for a violation of the Uniform Code of Discipline. The conditions of the expulsion and possible readmission to school will be outlined in a letter to be written by the Superintendent.
The motion failed on the following vote:
